Liquefied Petroleum Gas Inspection

Florida Laws | FAQ | Forms | Related Links | Contact

The Bureau of Liquefied Petroleum (LP) Gas Inspection licenses companies who sell propane; manufacture, sell and install propane appliances and equipment; and who service and repair such equipment. The Bureau inspects facilities where propane is stored and distributed, including cargo vehicles, bulk storage plants, dispensing units, pipeline distribution systems and cylinder exchange systems. The Bureau also qualifies persons as competent to engage in LP gas business activities, conducts investigations of accidents related or linked to LP gas, and publishes and disseminates safety information.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. If I own my gas equipment and work on it myself (and I am not selling or leasing the equipment), do I have to have a license?
No. Persons servicing or repairing propane equipment are only required to be licensed if they are offering that service to the public and receive payment. However, Florida law does require that anyone performing this type of work be trained, and strongly encourages homeowners and other equipment operators to have trained, licensed personnel perform their service, installation and repair work.

  2. Is it permissible for one to service or repair propane equipment with a contractor’s license issued through another state agency which allows installation of natural gas piping and appliances?
No. Propane work in Florida can only be performed by a person or company who has a license issued by the Bureau of LP Gas Inspection, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. No other license is valid for this type work.

  3. What are the penalties for performing propane work without a license?
Performing propane appliance, equipment or piping installation, or service or repair work without a license is a third-degree felony in Florida, punishable as provided in Chapter 775, F.S.

  4. Is it legal for a manager to allow employees who have not taken the state examination to fill propane containers for customers at a dispensing station?
Yes. However, while it is not necessary that all employees take the state examination, all employees handling propane must be trained and that training must be documented in the employee's file. Florida law requires that for each 10 employees performing LP Gas related work, one supervisory employee must have passed the state’s qualifier examination.

  5. Is there an age requirement for filling propane containers?
Yes. Florida labor laws prohibit the filling of propane containers by anyone under 18 years of age.
