IOCV Conference Statement
WORLD CONCERN
The XIVth Conference of the International Organization of Citrus Virologists(IOCV) was held from September 13-18, 1998, at Campinas, S.P., Brazil.
During this Conference, new reports of the spread of destructive graft-transmissible diseases of citrus, such as huanglongbing (citrus greening) and witches' broom, were presented. Additionally, participants observed the devastation of citrus variegated chlorosis (Xylella fastidiosa) for the first time.
These reports and observations have raised the professional concern of the scientists participating in the Conference that the exchange of propagating material, without adequate phytosanitary controls, has contributed to the spread. Governments need to be concerned, and take appropriate action to strengthen and enforce quarantine laws. The control of virus diseases is based on preventative measures, the most important being the use of healthy propagating material through strict quarantine and the implementation of in-country certification schemes for the provision of adequate supplies of disease-tested, true-to-type citrus.
