When material needs to be directed to the Botany Section for identification, please ensure that the material is adequate for identification and in good shape. Although material can sometimes be recognized from fragments, when the species is not immediately recognized, the plant must be keyed. Keys usually require the presence of flowers. Some keys also require fruits.
If you are bringing the specimen to Gainesville, please bring a sample with the entire flowering and fruiting plant (if possible). If it is not possible to bring the whole plant, bring a stem or twig with leaves and\or flowers attached to the stem. Make sure the plant does not wilt.
Descriptive information will assist plant identification. Note the color of the flower or fruit, the type of habitat where growing, and whether the plant was a vine, shrub, herb or tree. If the plant is cultivated, give the country of origin, if known.
If you are too far away to bring the sample, please include materials and information as listed above in your mailed sample. Spread the plant so that it looks like a picture in a book. Flatten your sample by placing it between cardboards and then tie together tightly. Do NOT place mailed material in plastic bags (unless you mail it early on Monday morning). Material in a plastic bag sent from the post office on Friday may reach botany as a rotten mess!
