Trialeurodes abutilonea Haldeman
Common name: bandedwinged whitefly
Diagnosis: Pupal case elevated on a palisade of vertical wax rods placed side by side. Dorsal edge of pupal case with a fringe of wax rods and the central dorsal region is black or dark brown.
Adults have zig-zag cross bands on the front wings. Hind wings are unmarked. The eyes are dark red and completely separated.
Comments: T. abutilonea can be separated from T. vaporariorum by the darkened central region of pupal case. T. floridensis pupal cases are nearly flat on the leaf and T. abutilonea and T. vaporariorum are elevated on a palisade of wax rods.
The adults are easily separated from other species because of the zig-zag cross bands and hence the common name, bandedwinged whitefly. This whitefly is not common on citrus in Florida and is apparently not economically damaging to citrus in Florida. However, it is a pest of vegetable and ornamental crops.
