Dialeurodes citri Ashmead

Common name: citrus whitefly

Diagnosis: Pupa is oval, yellowish-green with an orange spot on the back. The pupal case is opaque after emergence of the adult and the case retains its shape. Eggs are yellow with a nearly smooth surface. Adults with uniformly white wings.

Comments: This whitefly was once considered the major citrus pest in Florida, but today it ranks below citrus snow scale, Florida red scale, and possibly others. It is more common in northern Florida.

The pupal case is readily confused with Dialeurodes citrifolii (Morgan) and a microslide is needed for separation. However, the adults can be separated by the "cloudy" spot near the tip of the front wing of D. citrifolii. The eggs may be separated because those of D. citrifolii have a net-like surface and those of D. citri are nearly smooth.
