Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood

Common name: greenhouse whitefly

greenhouse whitefly

Diagnosis: Pupal case yellowish-green and the empty cases are colorless (glassy). Pupal case slightly convex and elevated above the leaf surface. Short glass-like wax rods make a fringe around the submargin. In some instances, apparently due to leaf characteristics, larger glass-like wax rods will be present on the dorsum.

Comments: This species is well known throughout the world and is a constant pest in greenhouses in colder areas. Most like T. abutilonea, but the pupal case does not have the central dorsal dark area of abutilonea. The adult of T. vaporariorum is without spots on the wings and the body is yellowish.

This whitefly is reported on citrus in Florida, but is not known to be an economic pest of citrus; however, it is an economic pest of some other crops, such as soybeans and tomatoes. For a more in depth discussion of the development trends and morphological variation the reader is referred to Russell 1948:46.
