Water Spinach
Permit Requirements For Cultivation
Water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) is listed both as a Federal noxious weed and a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Class I prohibited aquatic plant.
As provided for in Florida Department of Environmental Protection's rule 62C-52, water spinach may be cultured in a nursery regulated by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for the purpose of export outside of Florida only. However, you must also obtain a Federal permit for interstate movement.
Steps in obtaining a State permit:
- You must be registered as a nursery with the Division of Plant Industry.
- Obtain a Federal permit for the interstate movement of noxious weeds.
- Your local Division of Plant Industry inspector will ensure that you are in compliance with all conditions of a compliance agreement that you will complete and sign in the inspector's presence. Click here to see conditions of the permit.
