Farm Renewable and Efficiency Demonstration

The Farm Renewable and Efficiency Demonstration (FRED) Program provides free energy evaluations valued up to $4,500 to Florida agriculture producers. FRED also provides Florida agriculture producers grant reimbursement for 80 percent of the cost to implement the recommendations from the free energy evaluation up to $25,000. Examples of eligible project for reimbursement include energy efficient lighting and water pumps, and small scale renewable energy generation such as solar or biomass. Funding for the grant portion of the program will be made available to participants upon completion of the evaluation. Applications for participation are reviewed and approved based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be in compliance with the highly erodible land and wetland conservation provisions described in 7 CFR Part 12.
  • Have an interest in the agricultural operation as defined in 7 CFR Part 1400.
  • Have control of the land for the term of the proposed contract period.
  • The average adjusted gross income of the individual, joint operation or legal entity may not exceed $900,000.

Energy Evaluation

An energy evaluation is an investigation of all facets of an organization’s historical and current energy use with the objective of identifying and quantifying areas of energy waste within the organization’s activities. An energy evaluation establishes the baseline for any improvements and provides a comprehensive and systematic method for targeting cost effective efficiency gains.

When you sign up for a free farm energy evaluation an energy expert from the department’s Mobile Energy Lab (MEL), will evaluate energy-consuming equipment at your facility. They will recommend low-cost/no-cost measures, as well as measures with longer paybacks, that will help you use energy more efficiently. The on-site analysis takes about two hours. Larger facilities may require additional time.

MEL teams of trained energy and water specialists will target EQIP eligible agriculture producers to conduct an evaluation of their energy and water usage through observation and measurement. Based on this evaluation, the team will provide a report recommending ways to improve the performance and efficiency of the farm’s energy and water systems. This report will consist of best management practices for water and energy, as well as specific infrastructure upgrades intended to maximize efficiency, which may include the utilization of on-farm renewable energy generation (solar, wind, biomass, etc.). After receiving the evaluation report, agriculture producers will be eligible to immediately apply for up to $25,000 (80 percent of the project cost) in funding under the FRED Program to implement recommended energy/water efficiency and renewable energy upgrades.
