Beetles comprise a major holding of the Museum of Entomology (FSCA), with more than 1,875,000 prepared specimens housed in 4,375 drawers. Geographical coverage is worldwide, but strengths are in the southeastern United States, the Caribbean, and Central America. Holdings from South America and Asia, especially from Bolivia and Taiwan, are growing. The museum holdings of the family Cerambycidae are exceptionally strong and will comprise one of the largest collections of this family in North America when entirely consolidated from donated and willed specimens. The E.J. Giesbert collection, probably the best private cerambycid collection in North America, was added in 1999. In 2005, the Gayle H. Nelson general beetle collection, which was very rich in Cerambycidae, was acquired.
Scarabaeidae are a large component, with nearly 90 percent of North American species represented. The Meloidae, mostly from the R.B. Selander collection, are well represented and the collection of immature Meloidae is the largest in the world. The collection of Endomychidae, mostly from H.F. Strohecker, is one of the best in the world. The FSCA collection of Buprestidae, which already included the Byrd K. Dozier collection, recently increased significantly in size with the addition of the more than 73,000 pinned buprestids from the Gayle H. Nelson collection.
Other significant holdings are in Bruchidae, Carabidae, Chrysomelidae, Cicindelidae, Coccinellidae, Cucujidae (sens. lat.), Curculionidae, Dytiscidae, Elateridae, Erotylidae, Histeridae, Hydrophilidae, Silphidae, Staphylinidae, and Tenebrionidae.
Major additions to the collection have come from R.H. Arnett, Jr., N. Chernoff, L.R. Davis, N.M. Downie, B.K. Dozier, J.H. Frank, E.J. Giesbert, F.T. Hovore, IV, L.L. Lampert, J.W. McReynolds, A.E. Miller, C.W. Mills III, G.H. Nelson, W. Rosenberg, J. Schuh, R.B. Selander, P.E. Skelley, C. Staines, K.H. Stephan, M.C. Thomas, R.H. Turnbow, K.W. Vick, J.E. Wappes, H.V. Weems, Jr., C.E. White, R.E. Woodruff, and F.N. Young, Jr.
